Batam has a population size of 915,882. The majority of the population consists of Malays, while a significant amount of the population is Chinese. There are also various indigenous tribes living in Batam.
Language
Bahasa Indonesia is the official language spoken in Batam, but English is spoken in tourist areas. Chinese dialects are also commonly used.
Transport
Batam can be reached from Singapore by an air-conditioned ferry. Batam’s Hang Nadim airport allows travel to Batam by plane.
Bus and Metro Trans provide a viable source of transport within Batam. The "Bus Pilot Project" was started by the government to cater to tourists' transport needs. Tickets need to be bought prior to boarding. Metro Trans offer an air-conditioned traveling option and run on fixed routes. There are many taxis, but they don't use meters and therefore a price needs to be negotiated. There are no fixed prices for trips. Taxis are a convenient way of transport, but they are not kept in good condition.
Climate
Batam has a tropical climate with an absence of distinct seasons. Humidity averages 80%, with lows of 60% and highs of 100%. Rainy season is from October to April. Dry season is from May until September. The most prominent winds are North and Northeasterly. The ocean currents are not strong. Clothing that is light and cool should be worn for the humid climate.

In the past, fishing was a major part of the economy. In modern times, the economy is dominated by manufacturing in the industrial center.
Manners
Respectable clothing that is not revealing should be worn when not on the beach. It's important to wear clothing that covers your shoulders and legs when visiting religious sites. Do not use your left hand to give or receive anything.
Tipping
Hotels often add a service charge, but if this is not added, a tip of 10% should be given. Hotel and airport porters should be tipped. Taxi drivers can be given a tip, but this is not compulsory.
