Eating Out in Cambodia

Edit This

Rice and fish are the basic food items among the Khmer people. Famous classical Khmer specialty widely enjoyed up to now are: Nhaom (a popular cuisine comprises of vinegar, dried or salted fish and herb and vegetable); Kor Kor ( normally cooked with fish and a mix of vegetables ); Amok (fish - or chicken - curry, cooked in a banana leaf); Samlor Machu (vinegar soup cooked with fish and mixed with a variety of vegetables). Other dishes cooked with pork, chicken, beef arealso the main diets. Chinese and Western menus are commonly available in the capita of Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville.

There is still a strong French colonial influence, with lots of bread shops selling filled baguettes for breakfast.

Cambodian food does not use curry powder in most of its dishes, even though the English menu may translate "spice paste" as curry for lack of a better term.

Fruits such as bananas and oranges are picked when ripe and sweet, so they taste different, and better, than what you might be used to.  Purchasing these fruits from a roadside stand is safe for your health as they are enclosed in a thick skin.  Another fruit surprise is a green or purple oval fruit slightly larger than a mandarin orange called "milk fruit" that tastes like a new almond - one does not eat the skin, only the soft insides (much like kiwi).  It has pits inside that are not eaten.

This Indian Restaurant in Siem Reap has very good food. They have an extensive menu, with a good vegetarian menu, and the prices are not expensive.Their curry, aloo and samosa dishes are especially excellent, and prices are quite reasonable. It is a small restaurant across from the provincial hospital north of Pub Street. If you like good Indian food, it is worth a go. I give it 5 stars for food.

L'Escale Des Arts

This restaurant opened up just ten days before we dined there, which must explain why it wasn't packed to the rafters.

They serve New Asian cuisine and we had a massive ten course meal with drinks for under $30/person.  It was the best meal we ate in Asia bar none.

Didieu Cloutier is a genius and his staff was fantastic.  I wish we'd had time to visit more than once!

Chomkar Nonaung Restaurant

Edit This

This restaurant serves Khmer food, cooked fresh and served picnic style, in cabanas surrounded by palm trees, very green and lovely surroundings.  Customers sit on the floor or in a hammock and are welcome to stay and snooze and/or play cards for the afternoon.  The food is authentic and menu prices vary from $2 up.  The menu is in Khmer but  the owner speaks English and is happy to assist in your choice of food.  The restaurant is across (east) the Japanese bridge, about ten kilometers on Highway 6A; take a hard right immediately past the more..
