Senior Travel in Bandar Seri Begawan

Edit This
The waterfront city of Bandar Seri Begawan is relatively untarnished by the tourism industry and you’ll find that most places don’t charge entrance fees. Here are some of the city's attractions and a few practical tips for senior travelers.

Kampong Ayer

Meaning literally "The Water Village," this is the largest water village in the world and  is best viewed by water taxi. There are hundreds of traditional houses on stilts in the waters of the Brunei River. It’s not unusual to get invited home by the friendly inhabitants of Kampong Ayer. If you do get to visit one, notice the ornate interior.

You can get a water taxi along the shores of the Brunei River or from the main market in Bandar Seri Begawan. Boat prices are negotiable. Generally, an hour’s tour costs you about B$30.

The Mangrove Boat Safari

A guided tour is the perfect idea for mature travelers. Mona Florafauna Tours operate a 4-hour night safari called the Sungei Brunei Night Safari. The tour takes you via  traditional boat through the Sungei Brunei mangroves, teeming with wildlife and fireflies.

You wind up with dinner at the Kampong Ayer Restaurant and the lighting of the sultan's palace at Bandar Seri Begawan.

Tips on Best Accommodation for Senior Travelers

Empire Hotel and Country Club
Jerudong

This luxurious beachfront resort hotel with spa is 15 minutes from the airport and 20 minutes from the city. If you are a golf enthusiast, the Jack Nicklaus-designed championship golf course is just next door.

Sheraton Utama

If you choose to stay at this hotel, you’ll be within walking distance of many city attractions such as the Royal Regalia Museum, Kampong Ayer and Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque.

Jubilee Hotel
Jubilee Plaza Jalan Kg. Kianggeh B.s.b. Bs 8111

This is a budget hotel, but also recommended by travelers. It’s in the center of the city, 15 minutes by road from the airport. It’s also close to several tourist attractions.

Currency and Dress Code

The Singapore dollar is accepted in Brunei. Hotels, banks and most department stores will cash traveler's checks.

If you visit the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque or any other, remember to wear clothes that don’t reveal much skin or above-the-knee shorts. It’s better to wear socks, as you’re expected to take off your shoes when you enter the mosque, and the marble floors are cold.
