Currency
The Brunei dollar and the Singapore dollar are both accepted here legally. So if you are arriving at Brunei from Singapore you do not need to change your currency here.
Population
Brunei is a very small country with a low population of about 46,300 people. They are very friendly and easy to get along with.
Language
The official language of this country is Malay, though they speak other languages such as English as well.
Visa Information
U.S. passport-holders should have at least six months remaining validity on their passport before entering Brunei whether for business or pleasure. They can obtain visas upon arrival for up to 90 days at no charge. There is an airport departure tax as well. Others too can obtain visas on arrival.
Health and safety
The following vaccinations are recommended for people visiting this country.
Hepatitis A: Recommended for all travelers over one year.
Hepatitis B: Recommended for all non-immune travelers at potential risk for acquiring this infection. It is recommended for long-term travelers and expatriates, as well as any traveler requesting protection against hepatitis B infection.
Influenza: Vaccination is recommended for all travelers who are more than 6 months old and who have not received a flu shot in the previous 12 months.
Japanese Encephalitis: Travelers staying in rural areas are recommended to go in for this vaccination if the duration of their trip exceeds 3 to 4 weeks. Vaccination is also advised for expatriates living in this country.
Apart from this all travelers must take precautions against mosquito bites.
Polio: This is recommended for all travelers who are more than 18 years old.
Rabies: Vaccination is recommended for travelers spending time outdoors in rural areas. Children especially should be vaccinated as they are at higher risk.
Routine Immunizations: All routine immunizations should be followed.
Typhoid: Vaccination against typhoid is recommended for all travelers.
All travelers are recommended to get comprehensive health insurance including air ambulance insurance before visiting this country.
Local customs and etiquette
As a strict Islamic country they prohibit drinking in public. Do not break this ban as it could land you in trouble. Women too are asked to dress modestly in accordance with Islamic norms.
