Bandar Seri Begawan is the capital of Brunei. Brunei food is a lot like Chinese food with international influences. They have adapted things like Indonesian, Lebanese, Thai, Japanese and Indian flavors into their cuisine. Common meals in the area include staples like fish and rice. Fresh fruits and wheat products are also prevalent in the area. Some popular dishes are Ambuyat (also known as edible glue), beef rendang, nasi lemark, puteri nanas and Satay; they also eat a lot of spicy beef dishes and chocolate. Most of the dishes are spicy and are served with rice probably to drown the low fire in your mouth. Restaurants in the area are very affordable with the average price around $10 to $20 if not less. The restaurants seem to serve mostly foods that are commonplace like traditional Brunei cuisine. You can find some restaurants with international cuisine and chains or fast food places like Dairy Queen, Pizza Hut and McDonald.

Food Stands

The best places to get some of the best foods of the area in Bandar Dert Begwan are open air food stands. There are places all over the city that sell cheap variations of Brunei traditional dishes. The most popular food stand food is satay. Satay is a skewer of spicy in Thai cooking. It can also be served with cucumbers, onions and ketupat (rice in a napah leaf). Regardless of how it's served it is one of the most popular of local favorites and getting it at one of the open air food stands is the singularly best way to get it. You can find a majority of these places near the riverfront and prices are always under $10.

Sit Down Restaurants

Other than the fast food and chain restaurants you'll find in the area there are a few restaurants that are locally owned and serve traditional food. Amina Arif Restaurant is one of the best places in the area to get Ambuyat. Ambuyat is made from sago that comes from trees. They make a paste out of the sago and then you eat it with cadas; dipping it into a hot sauce before eating it. Other good restaurants in the area are Regent's Rang Machel, Thien Thien Restaurant, The Atrium Cafe and Kedia Makan Dan Minum Hajah Halimah.
