Wella devalaya Esala festival in Unawatuna

Wella Devalaya Esala festival in Unawatuna would be held in July 2007 starting from Sunday 29th Esala Full Moon day.
This annual festival brings hordes of people from the villages around Galle to the sleepy fisher village of Unawatuna when the whole atmosphere takes on a carnival spirit.
The commercialisation does not take away from the devotion and worshiping of the occation.
Dating back to hundreds of years its more traditionally and new Rice offering festival.
Even today the devotees bring and offer rice to be pounded and made in to a KIRI or curd like porriage with coconut milk and treacle.
The devotees who are Paddy culvitators would seek blessings for timely rain and bountiful harvest, others seek redress for various woes, still other make vows for jobs, marriage, ailments, sickness etc.
Still others make offerings for safe return of loved ones from Middle east jobs and war front in North and East.
The Dagoba on the Rumassala hillock, the Buddha shrine and the Devol Devalaya on the western point of the Unawatuna bay consist of the place of worship.
