Polannaruwa is located 216km north east of Colombo and was the second
ancient singhalese capital for around 300 years from 1100AD. the
ancients sites are much more compact than in anuradapura.
The sites show the height of ancient architectural and engineering accomplishments for example a 7 storey palace for the king and a 20-30m high vatadage - circular relic house usually with 4 buddha statues facing out at the cardinal points with stone pillars encircling it which held up a huge conical wooden roof (now missing).
