Mihintale Travel Guide

Mihintale in North Central Sri Lanka is the cradle of Theravada buddhism in Sri Lanka . According to the story Indian Emperor Ashoka had sent his son Mahinda to Sri Lanka to spread the teachings of the Buddha. Mahinda met  King Devanampiya Tissa of Anuradhapura during a royal hunting expedition. He converted the king and hence the country to buddhism.  The date of this meeting is believed to have been on the full moon of June in the year 247 BC.
