From the UK
Edit ThisFrom the UK, you can get to Sri Lanka via your local airport, rail or road to either Glasgow, Manchester, Gatwick or Heathrow.
Air Lanka is the countries own airline, and I guarantee you a feeling of being treated special. If you like lots of comforts, then you won't go far wrong with this airline, which takes the more direct flight path, occassionally touching down in Male, capital of the Maldive Islands, enroute.
There are plenty of other airlines going to Sri Lanka, but none seem to go there direct.
Colombo Airport is everything you would expect from a large modern travel centre, only remember that it is Asia, and not the West.
Security is always tight there, as a civil war between the Tamils and the Government has been off and on for more than 20 years.
Let me add;
No tourist has been targetted EVER!
The areas of troubles are focussed on the East and North.
Any other area if ever, will be of military and not tourist importance.
Britain originally brought in Tamils from India to do the tea harvesting.
Now the Tamils want their own area, like Wales Scotland and Northern Ireland do.
Transport from the airport is usually by mini bus or air conditioned taxi.
You will need to visit every country on Planet Earth to find any peoples as friendly as the Sri Lankans, and yes, some may try it on, but, in the main, they are very respectful, friendly and helpful.
Trains around the area are cheap and plentiful, and it is very advisable to travel First Class, so that you get a little space. Don't worry, you can travel miles and miles for one Dollar.
Tuk Tuks are motorised rickshaws, and should be used sparingly, or for short trips, as the drivers are a law unto themselves when it comes to giving way at railway barriers jams and lights.
There is plenty of everything if you ask.
Good holidaying.
