Spending

Although all types of shopping are available in Karachi, it is an ideal location for the bargain hunter or any traveler on a strict budget. The currency used in Karachi and most of Pakistan is the Pakistan Rupee. The U.S. Dollar is equivalent to about 81 Pakistan Rupees. In this city, your dollar will certainly stretch far. Karachi has been listed in the top 5 most affordable cities in the world over the past decade, and landed at position number 4 on Businessweek.com's World's Cheapest Cities of 2009.

Shopping Precautions

It is necessary to be careful of pickpockets while shopping in Karachi, especially in a busy street market. Another precaution to take note of at street markets are mosquitoes. Just because you are shopping does not mean Pakistan’s dangerous mosquitoes aren’t as well. Always wear bug spray or rub while outdoors in Karachi. Recognize that appearing to be a western tourist leads to being up-sold. Most Karachi residents make the assumption western tourists must be millionaires. Always attempt to negotiate down if a price seems unreasonable, and remember that the city is known for its bargains.

Regions

The Saddar district of Karachi is the locale of most street markets and souvenir style shopping. It is home to the famous Zainab Market. If you are looking for a modern shopping center with chain shops, you should look to the Clifton district. Park Towers, also known as The Point is located in this district, and has popular stores you would find in a western shopping mall.

Transportation

The best method of transportation on a day of shopping is by taxi. In Karachi, it is extremely easy to flag a taxi to and from shopping areas at a reasonable price. However, most taxis in Karachi do not have a meter. Make sure to negotiate and quote a price with the driver before you are en route to your shopping destination.

Karachi’s many districts will meet your shopping needs, whatever they may be. You will find the city’s shopping centers and street fairs to be the bargain hunter's dream.
