There are 3 main areas in Kathmandu where you can stay: Thamel, Freak Street and Durbar Marg. The latter of these three houses the more expensive Hotels and isn't an option for the low budget traveler. Thamel has grown out to a big bustling area of town with lots of hotels, shop and restaurants, but it is hard to find the Nepali spirit here. Parties can go on until the wee-hours of the morning and the food ranges from Nepali to continental to Mexican and even Japanese. For a more authentic feel you will have to go to Freak Street, the place where all the hippies stayed during the 70's. Also there are budget hotels and luxury hotels and some of the best hotels in Kathmandu Nepal. The price difference between Freak Street and Thamel is rather small and in either of the two you should be able to get a double room for 3 US$.
