Hiking around Kathmandu

Kathmandu valley lies in the middle hills of Nepal that is subordinate to the majestic Himalayas in the north. Lush hills with its ridges above 2,000 m surrounds the 218 sq miles area of Kathmandu valley. These hills offer beautiful walking tour from a day to week with the Himalayan backdrop. The whole surrounding hills in easy access from Kathmandu could be divided into two main parts, the southern part and the northern part.
Most of the forests in the north are now protected a newly formed national park - the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. The park was established as a Watershed and Wildlife Reserve in 1976 and was declared as a national park in 2002 for the protection of its flora and fauna. It covers an area of 159 sq. km and is a true representation of the mid hills. There are over 10 hiking routes in and around the national park. The most famous is the hike to 2,700 m Shivapuri hill.
In the southern part, hike to Namo Buddha from Dhulikhel and then to Balthali is the most famous one. Beside that there are hiking routes to Champadevi hill and Lakuri Bhangyang.
This is the best way to see countryside of Nepal. Kathmandu's cultural heritages will engross you for few days. But if you are tired of city chaos, it also offer nice retreat for its commotion.
