When to Go in India

Edit This
India is a vast country with several different climates, so knowing the weather prediction for when you are going can be difficult. If you plan to visit both the north and the south, you may experience different weather altogether, but generally the best time to visit is in the winter months from October to February.

During the winter, the weather is a bit cooler and many normally wet areas of the Northeast dry out and the hotter South India cools down as well. This is the best time to plan a trip to notable locations such as Delhi, Agra, or Varanasi, as well as to visit Goa or other parts of South India.

The summer months of March to May in India can be very hot and humid. During this time, you can still have an enjoyable trip, however. Try visiting one of many hill stations to enjoy cooler weather and scenic beauty or go trekking in the Himalayas at this time.

The one time that should be avoided, if possible, is monsoon season. During this time extensive raining can cause some serious destruction and make it hard to enjoy your trip. Flooding can be a problem in Kerala because monsoons begin at the end of May, travel north and abate by September, cutting off communications, causing landslides and stopping all travel during this time period. If you are traveling to Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu, be aware they receive a second rainy period between October and December.

If possible, you should work to plan your trip to India around a celebration of event. During the high travel season from October to February, there are many opportunities for experiencing some great Indian culture with many festivals and celebrations. During October and November is Dussehra, Diwali and Durga Puja, as well as the infamous Pushkar Fair in Rajasthan.

In January, you can experience the Republic Day of India and Lohri, a traditional festival for the Punjabis. March brings the festival Holi, the festival of colors, where people line the street to douse others in colorful ink.

If you plan on visiting India during a festival time, it is a good idea to do some research on the festival, as some serious crowding and noise may be overwhelming for some visitors. However, if you are up for it, seeing India during a festival is one of the best ways to experience this country so rich in many different cultures and traditions.
