When to Go in Calcutta

Edit This
The best time to visit Calcutta will be governed most likely by your tolerance for heat, as well as your itinerary. With the nicest weather (hot temps during the day, nicely complemented by cooler weather at night) generally falling between November and the end of February, this is the best time to be in Calcutta. The typical tourist season is a bit longer, from October to March. October and March can be stifling hot during the daytime. There are often post-monsoon showers in October.

Calcutta Weather

The most idyllic weather in Calcutta takes place in December and January. If you can plan your trip around these months, this would be the best time to go. There is little rain during these months, and plenty of warm and pleasant sunshine. Getting into the spring, April through June can be extremely hot and make it difficult to do a lot of sightseeing during the day. From June, the monsoons set in and heavy rains can create chaos and traffic problems citywide, as streets flood with water.

Calcutta Festivals

A great time to visit any Indian city is during a festival, and Calcutta is no exception. One of its biggest festivals of the year – Durga Puja – falls from September to October, and is a great time to visit Calcutta and the surrounding Bengal state. The festival which worships mother Durga, the Goddess of Power, is celebrated in Calcutta with a long series of rituals. It's a time for socializing with family, friends and relatives. The streets are lively with people dressed in new clothing, festival cuisine and music, and it's a great time to enjoy the sights and sounds.

Other notable times to visit Calcutta include during Kali Puja and Holi festivals. Kali Puja, known as Diwali in other parts of India, is celebrated with firecrackers and over 2000 altars erected around the city. It takes place in either October or November. Holi is a festival of colors to honor Krishna, that is celebrated by people throwing colored water and powder at each other. It's celebrated in March.

Though there are many factors that go into planning a trip, trying to arrange your plans around the pleasant weather and festivals is generally a good idea. You'll get to see the most exciting side of this ancient city, teeming with character.
