Sights in Srinagar (Pauri Garhwal)
Edit ThisThere are many Srinagar (Pauri Gahwal) Sights which are of historic importance, as the city was once the capital of The Gahrwal Kingdom. Today, it is a major cultural and educational hub of the district.
Sri Tapoo (Island)
The island is a small patch of riverbed on the Alaknanda River, located just 2 kilometers from the main town. The area is not yet developed as a tourist destination, however, it holds mythological importance. It is believed that Sri Yantra, one of the most complex forms of all yantras in Sri Vidya, a tantric teaching, lied embedded in the riverbed here in a slab that was thrown away by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. This place is considered very pious just like any other temple.
Shankar Math
This Math was established by Sri Adi Shankaracharya and is dedicated to Vishnu Mohini (One form of goddess Laxmi) Temple. To stop the cruel practice of human sacrifice in front of Sri Yantra slab, the Guru had thrown the divine slab in the Alaknanda riverbed and found amazing powers in the place where the slab was earlier placed. He came up with the temple here.
Hill Top View
Those interested in trekking, can take the route to hill top which is on the outskirts of the town on the Srinagar-Pauri highway. The point gives an eagle’s view of the Srinagar valley. The stretch is enjoyable with few twists and turns.
Dhari Devi Temple
This ancient temple is dedicated to goddess Dhari ( Kali) who is believed to be the “Goddess of the valley”. The temple is situated on the banks of Alaknanda River in Dhari village off the Badrinath- Srinagar highway. The temple has amazingly remained intact even after a severe flood in Alaknanda River. Photography is strictly prohibited here.
Gola Bazar
This is the ultimate hangout of the residents in the evenings. This small junction is situated in the middle of the town with small shops on either side of the road. This place is like any other small town center place in the country with several roadside eateries adding up to the crowd during evenings. One can get a glimpse of the Garhwal hills at the backdrop here.
Museums
Those interested in learning the rich history and culture of Srinagar town should visit the Himalayan Archaeological and Ethnography Museum in the University area of the town. The museums showcases pottery, sculptures and antiques of the mid-central Himalayan region during the excavation. It also homes some of the rare photographs, paintings and manuscripts.
