The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

A haven for rare and indigenous tropical flora & fauna, this Wildlife Sanctuary, nestled in the Southern Western Ghats of Peninsular india, offers an exotic holiday experience to the nature-lover.

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, one of India's biggest wild life sanctuaries, is a Tiger Reserve covering an area of 777 sq-km.

It's centrepiece, the man-made Periyar Lake at a height of 2000 ft. covers an area of 26

Wildlife in the sanctuary include Elephants, Sambar Deer, Wild Boar, Nilgri Langur, monkeys, Bonnet and Lion-Tailed Macaques, Porcupine, the Gaur, Mouse Deer, bears, wild dogs, civets jackals, flying squirrels, mongoose, pangolin cobra and many others species of wild aminmals.

The Periyar Lake

The most convenient way to view wildlife is to take a boat cruise on the lake, the only means of transport within the sanctuary. Boat cruises on the lake take two hours. The morning and evening boat rides usually provide the best chance of viewing animals before they retreat into the jungle.

The Flora

Periyar is a luxuriantly vegetated tract, 75% of which is covered with evergreen and semi-evergreen forests. Moist deciduous forests, grasslands and to a small extent Eucalyptus Plantations make up the rest of the area. Sporadic patches of 'sholas', which are sub tropical mountain forests, occupy the crest and crevices of high altitude tracts, while clusters of bamboo occur along water logged areas.

Periyar is located at Thekkadi, Idukki district. The Thekkady Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1993. It is located at 9deg 15min and 9deg 40min North latitude and 76deg 55min and 77deg 25min East longitude. At an altitude varying from 900m to 1800m sea level, the climate is pleasant with temperatures ranging from a maximum of 32deg Celsius to a minimum of 15deg Celsius. Forest Areas cover about 777 Sq.Km and Evergreen Forests extends up to 360 Sq.Km.

Periyar Wildlife Park is one of India's most enjoyable and intriguing national parks. It is certainly one of the country's largest and the best administered, and is the veritable home of the Indian elephant. In addition, it offers the most luxurious way of viewing animals in their natural environment - you just need to relax in the comfort of a motor launch and the panorama of the park unfolds as you glide across the placid waters of Periyar Lake.

The best time to visit Periyar is between October and May. The hot months of March, April and May are the best times to sight wild animals. Scarcity of water brings the animals , especially the herds of elephants, down to the Periyar lake to bath and frolic in the waters
