The People's Museum, Kakching was established in the year 1981 under the pioneering effort of Mayanglambam Gourachandra Singh. The People�s Museum, Kakching in its twenty years long history has accumulated nearly 1200 rare manuscripts and scriptures belonging to the state. Many of the sacred puyas or local ( Manipuri ) religious texts collected in this museum are being sought after the students of Manipur language and culture. The artifacts collected in this Museum, the materials ranging from stone age tools and products to the contemporary records, documents etc. the traditional customs, carves, wooden seats, weighing machines, weapons of hunting and war technological implements, ancient and medieval manuscripts etc. reflect the complex nature of the culture and civilization of the state. The collection of pottery, tribal headgears and ornaments, rings belonging to the medieval life project the ethnic variety of Manipur.
This museum at the same time works on literary publications too on her own credit. Leirol ( the flower ballads of Manipur ), Neolithic tools of Manipur ( in English ), Yakairol ( in English ) a number of rituals books, traditional novels of Meitei scripts etc. may be her major published works.
Mentioned may also be made of Ariba Meiteilongee Ramayana, which has been prescribed for graduate studies, and Birbabu Tuba, Shal-Kao and Thawan Hiran etc. for post graduate courses in the Manipuri language and literature of the Manipur University. Two books, one in Manipuri and the other one in English, on the socio-economic studies of Kwatha on indigenous group of Meitei, were released by Prof. Gangumei Kamei, Minister of Higher Education, Government of Manipur on 9th May 1995 with the financial assistance of National Museum of New Delhi. Manipurda Yotsung Yotsa, Traditional Iron Smelting and Forging in Manipur was being brought.
