Gokarna has a population of over 25,000 residents, but this number grows rapidly due to the pilgrims coming from all over India to visit the numerous impressive Hindu temples or to attend the Maha Shivaratri festival. The local people use mainly their native Kannada language, which is one of the classical languages of India. English is spoken by about one third of the locals, but it is spoken at an average level. You may experience some communication difficulties, and it is a good idea to have someone with you who knows the language.
The currency used in Gokarna, as in the rest of India, is the Indian rupee. One US dollar is worth about 47 rupees in summer 2010. All payments are made in cash, so you will surely need to exchange some money. You can do this at the Om Hotel, Kiran's Internet or at the Pai STD. The latter gives the best exchange rates and is the only officially licensed money exchange booth in Gokarna. If you have a VISA card, you can also use the ATM at the Karnataka Bank on Bus Stand Road, but keep in mind the ATM will charge you a small withdrawal fee.
