When to Go in SrinagarEdit This
When faced with the sheer delight of visiting Srinagar, the capital city of the northernmost state in India, the foremost question faced by the tourists is “Srinagar, when to go?”
April to June
The best time to visit Srinagar is during the months of April to June. During this period, the weather is balmy and cool. You can visit the various lakes in Srinagar. Dal Lake and Nagin Lake are the 2 famous lakes there. You will also see various houseboats floating on the lakes. The tourists can hire the houseboats and stay there. These are fully-equipped and furnished with traditional Kashmiri handicrafts. Srinagar is also called the "Venice of the East" as the houseboats floating on the rivers resemble the view presented by the gondolas in Venice. During this period, you can also visit the Shankaracharya temple that is at the top of Sulaiman Hill. There are also beautiful gardens in full bloom during this period. These gardens were established during the Mughal dynasty by rulers like Shah Jahan and Jehangir. Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh and Nashim Bagh are some of the famous gardens that should be visited during spring and summer time when they are in full bloom. There are a lot of mosques also in Srinagar.
The Jama Masjid mosque is one of the oldest. There are also the Khanqah Moulla, Rozabal Mosque and Pather Masjid. Then, there are various shrines that are dedicated to saints such as Dasgeer Sahib, Bulbul sahib and Hari Parbat.
September to October
You can also visit Srinagar during September and October when you can witness the spectacle of migratory birds flying in to Hokersar from Siberia. Hokersar is a wetland near Srinagar which is used as a transitory place by the birds. The birds present a beautiful sight and Hokersar is a favorite haunt of ornithologists.
Winters and Summers
You can enjoy your winters in Srinagar. There are the hill stations of Pahalgam and Gulmarg that are near Srinagar. Gulmarg is famous for its skiing when there is heavy snowfall. Skiers from all over the world gather there in winter for a great skiing experience. Gulmarg is called the "Switzerland of Asia" and is famous for the hills and the natural lush greenery. If you prefer a cool climate instead of winters, you can visit the place during summers as the Gulmarg is also famous for having the a green golf course placed at the highest altitude in the world. The golf course is situated at an altitude of 2,650 meters and golf tournaments are regularly held there. Pahalgam is a resort that lies between the confluence of 2 rivers, Sheshnag Lake and Lidder River. It is frequented by tourists during the summer to see its pristine beauty and enjoy its cool climate. You can also enjoy fishing and trekking there.
You can visit Srinagar throughout the year--winters are ideal for skiing and summers for sight-seeing.
