Getting Around in Srinagar

Srinagar (the paradise on earth), is a place cherished by many a traveler. Srinagar transportation is not an issue, as there are private cars and public means of transport available, both local travel and for excursions to adjoining areas.

Rented Vehicles

All rented vehicles are chauffeur driven. It is not possible to obtain any self-driven vehicles.

Boats

Special Kashmiri boats known as Shikaras are employed for touring on the River Jhelum and in the Dal Lake. Shikara rates are set by the local union.

Deluxe Buses

Another convenient Srinagar transportation is deluxe buses. They are operated by the Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation, as well as other transportation agencies. Charges for seats vary between the deluxe, super-deluxe and other categories.

Mini Buses

This is one of the most commonly used modes of transport. There are 19 seater mini buses that come within the economy range. The charges of getting around using these vehicles are between 50 and 60 Rupees.

Auto Rickshaws

Getting around Srinagar by auto rickshaws (a motorized version of the traditional rickshaw) is a cheap means of seeing the city. It is also another widely used means of transport. An auto rickshaw to anywhere in Srinagar will cost fewer than 60 Rupees.

Air

Half a dozen airlines offer flights between Srinagar and Delhi (from US $88, 1¼ hours) or Jammu (US $86, 35 minutes). Airlines that operate in Srinagar are Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and Air Sahara.
