International Himalayan Festival
A festival originated to honor the day the Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985, the International Himalayan Festival is special to locals as it symbolizes the goals he had regarding peace. Stretching over a period of three days, the festival's goals are focused on strengthening the ties between locals and increasing harmony between the natives and Tibetan monks living in these mountains. Shows and performances promoting peace are the main highlight of this festival, and a huge attraction to tourists traveling through the area during December.
The first festival of the year, the Halda festival welcomes the new year with a bang. A very spiritual festival that lasts for two days, the Halda festival incorporates family gatherings, dancing and drinking. One of the highlights of the festival is the traditional bonfire made of cedar twigs. Every person from the village adds to the fire that symbolizes the unity of the community.
Lohri or Maghi
Lohri, or Maghi festival, as it is also commonly called, is an agricultural festival that is held in mid-January to promote fertility and prosperity. Very popular for its singing and folk dancing that continue all through the night, the Lohri festival is a popular tourist attraction as you get to view traditional dance and costumes worn by this culture for centuries. Not only will you get to experience traditional dance, food and entertainment, the Lohri festival is also home to a huge amount of local stalls and carts in which locals sell handicrafts and souvenirs, ensuring that you will have something to remember your time in Mcleodganj.
Himachal Winter Carnival
In February, the Himachal Winter Carnival is the event to attend. Winter sports local to the area are held during this festival and even tourists are given a chance to compete, making it a true cultural experience. You get to experience the fun hands on. Dancing, entertaining skits and plays and the "Winter Queen" contest are just a few of the exciting events that take place during this winter carnival, making it a must for a cultural adventure.
