Location -
Delhi is located in the Punjab region of northern India. India is located in Asia bordered by Pakistan, Myanmar, China, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. The exact coordinates for Delhi are 28.61 degrees north, 77.23 degrees east. Uttar Pradesh (an Indian State) borders Delhi to the east, and Haryana (an Indian State) borders Delhi to the west, north, and south. The sacred Yamuna river flows through Delhi.

Population -
According the 2001 Indian census the Delhi metro population was close to 13 million residents. Considering the average annual growth rate of 4.2 percent, the estimated 2010 population of the Delhi metro area is somewhere between 16 and 21 million residents.

Language -
The official language of Delhi, as well as all of India is Hindi. But Punjabi, Urdu, and English are also commonly used throughout.


Currency -
The official currency of Delhi, and India, is the Indian rupee (code INR). The most common symbols for the Indian rupee are Rs, or Re. Also known in some parts as the rupaya, the rupee is subdivided into 100 paise. The most frequently used coins of the rupee are the 1, 2, 5, and 10 rupee coins. The 5, 10, 25, and 50 paise coins are rarely used in India. The banknotes of the Indian rupee are the 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 rupee notes. Most major banks and hotels in Delhi offer currency exchange, but the major exchange centers are Connaught Place and Pahargunj. It is advisable to exchange a small amount of currency before arriving in India. Major credit cards and traveler checks are widely accepted throughout, but it is smart to carry a small amount of local currency on you at all times.

Time Zone -
Indian Standard Time (IST) is the official time zone of Delhi, but is also referred as Greenwich Mean Time plus 5.5 hours (GMT +5.5). India does not observe Daylight Savings Time, so Indian Standard Time is the same year round.
