Eating out in Dhaka is always a bit of an adventure.  If you have a stomach of steel, you will find Bangladeshi food of varying quality at just about every major street and many side streets.  However, if you desire familiar food from the west or even China and the peace of mind that comes from eating at a high(er) end restaurant, you may have to embark on somewhat of an expedition.

Most of the western style restaurants in Dhaka you will find in Gulshan and Banani.  The more expensive your taste, the more likely this will be your final destination.  If you are happy with more of a fast-food taste, especially fried chicken, you will find various knock-offs of your favorite fast-food joints scattered throughout the city.
