Savar

Savar has beautiful gardens and a somber memorial to those who died in the 1971 War of Liberation.

It is located several miles NNW of Dhaka and can be reached easily by bus.

Open plan gardens pass between tranquil ponds towards the tall, pointed monument to the three million that were killed in nine months.

Although worth a visit to remember the sacrifice made for independance, for a foreigner it is difficult to relax there since it is, not surprisingly, a favourite spot for child beggars. Although most visitors are willing to give a little something this can then end up in a growing group of hangers on.

For a quieter walk around gardens and lakes with wild birds, try also the grounds of the nearby Jahangirnagar University.
