Day Trips
Edit ThisSavar
Edit ThisSavar has beautiful gardens and a somber memorial to those who died in the 1971 War of Liberation.
It is located several miles NNW of Dhaka and can be reached easily by bus.
Open plan gardens pass between tranquil ponds towards the tall, pointed monument to the three million that were killed in nine months.
Although worth a visit to remember the sacrifice made for independance, for a foreigner it is difficult to relax there since it is, not surprisingly, a favourite spot for child beggars. Although most visitors are willing to give a little something this more..

Sonargaon
Edit ThisAlthough all but a few remnants of the ancient capital of Bengal are long-since gone, this is a town well worth visiting.
Sonagaon can be found just to the south east of Dhaka off the Chittagong highway. After the crowds of Dhaka it feels like a peaceful haven. Long abandoned homes of rich Hindus and an old bridge and older mosque add a mysterious quality to the town.
Sonagaon is also the home of a folk museum and local craft items may be purchased.
