In Seoul there is practically a museum on every corner. If you're going to be in this fantastic city and are interested in South Korea's culture and history, there are several museums you can visit. If you're interests lie more towards artworks, there are museums for that as well. Here are some of the top museums that are definitely worth a visit. Keep in mind that unless otherwise stated, all Korean museums are closed on Mondays.

History

If you're interested in the history of Korea, the Korean War Memorial Museum is definitely a great place to start. Located at 8 Yongsan-dong, 1-ga, Yongsan, the museum tells the history of the Korean War. Some exhibits have no English translation, but the exhibits themselves tell the story. The museums hours are from 9:30 to 18:00, and the cost is 3000 KRW. The closest metro station is Samgakji, on lines 4 or 6. Take exit 12.

Culture

The National Museum of Korea is located at 168-6 Yongsan-dong, 6-ga, Yongsan. Entrance is 2000 KRW and it's open from 9:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and until 19:00 on weekends. To view this impressive collection of Korean heritage, take metro line 4, get off at Ichon Station and take exit 2.

The National Folk Museum of Korea is also incredibly rich and impressive. Find it at Samcheongdong-gil 35, Jongno. Entrance is free and you can get your ticket at Gyeongbokgung palace. It is open from 9:00 to 18:00, 17:00 in the winter. Please note that this museum is closed on Tuesdays.

Art

The National Museum of Contemporary Art houses an impressive collection on location at San 58-1, Makkye-dong, Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi. Entrance is only 700 KRW, and the hours are from 9:00 to 18:00, 17:00 in winter. From metro line 4, take the Seoul Grand Park Station exit 4 and catch a free shuttle to the museum.

The Leeum Samsun Museum of Art is also worth a visit, at 747-18 Hannam-dong, Yongsan. Opening hours are from 10:30 to 17:00 and the entrance fee is from 10,000 to 17,000 KRW depending on which sections you want to tour. Hours are from 10:30 to 17:00, and the closest metro station is Hangangjin on line 6. Take exit 1.
