The Gyeonggi province in the most populous within South Korea. Roughly 48% of South Korea's population resides within this province. Despite the large number of people here, the area has been well preserved ecologically, leaving many beautiful things to see and do. The Hangang River splits the province, providing nature retreats such as hot springs and mud flats.
Weather
This province experiences four seasons typical of the four seasons experienced throughout much of the United States. Spring is mild and warm, while autumn denotes a cooling between the summer and winter. The winters are cold and snowy, and the summer months are quite hot. The bulk of rainfall happens in the summer months.
Rich in History
This province is rich in history as well, providing many things for the history buff to enjoy. A particularly entertaining story is the one revolving around the Hwaseong Fortress. Located in the city of Suwon, it was built to honor burial remains of Prince Sado. Sado was killed by his own father after refusing to commit suicide. In exchange, the prince was locked inside a rice chest alive and left to die. Years later, Sado's son would build the fortress in his father's honor.
Pottery Center
Noted as the premier center for pottery in the entire world, the Incheon pottery village here is certainly worth a visit. The area first became a world pottery center during the Joseon Dynasty in the 1300's. Today, there are about 80 pottery factories in the village and more than 300 working kilns creating new pottery every day.
Beautiful Natural Attractions
The Sihwaho Lake area is Korea's first artificial wetland and is made up of marshy area and has a lot of reeds. The idea behind creating the wetlands was to use nature to improve water quality within the area. Largely undeveloped, the area offers information on Korea's ecological system and large unspoiled areas to relax. The area is closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly.
Festivals
There are many festivals through out the year held in different cities in the province. The bulk of the festivals are held in the fall months of October and September although May, August and April also play host to many festivals.
