In 1857, the city of Sapporo had a population of only seven people, but is now Japan’s fifth largest city. The modern city of Sapporo has many accommodations options for tourists or business travelers. You can choose from Japanese and Western style accommodations in all price ranges. Spending at least one night in a Japanese style hotel is a great way to experience the Japanese culture.  Even though it's just lodging, you might be surprised at how pleasantly different the Japanese hotels are from the western style ones.

Ryokan Inns

A ryokan is a Japanese style inn that will serve an authentic Japanese style dinner in your room. There will be a futon rather than a bed and tatami mats instead of carpet.  In the Nakamuraya Ryokan in Sapporo, all of the rooms are Japanese style. It is in the center of town so shops and restaurants are within walking distance. In the Nakamuraya's twenty-four hour traditional Japanese saunas, the men and women are separated. After a night out on the town or maybe if you are an early riser, you can enjoy yourself in these spa like amenities. Check-out time is a little early at 10am. The staff here speaks basic English and takes credit cards, but there is no internet.

Western Hotels

Japan can be expensive but if you do your homework you can find a western style hotel to suit your budget. The Hotel New Budget Sapporo is clean, inexpensive and centrally located. Conveniently located only five minutes from the Odori subway station and four minutes from the Susukino subway station, this hotel offers internet, coin operated laundry machines, massage service and a complimentary breakfast.

Capsule Hotels

Nothing is cheaper and more interesting than a night spent at a one of Japan’s famous capsule hotels. Though not for the claustrophobic, capsule hotels are full of high end communal amenities.  Most feature deluxe Japanese baths with saunas and Jacuzzi pools. They also have food, drinks and a lounge with comfortable seating and televisions. The capsule is small and private and contains a TV and radio, although it is rude to use them late at night because you will disturb the other guests.  You will not be able to stand up in the capsule but it is comfortable and cozy.  Capsules for men only are easy to find but for women you will want to try the Safro Spa Capsule Hotel.
