Tashkorgan, Xinjiang, China is a small town located about 300 kilometers up the Karakoram Highway (KKH) in the Pamir Mountains. Tashkorgan is where China Customs-Immigration is located for exit to and entry from Pakistan over the Khunjerab Pass. The elevation in Tashkorgan is about 3100 meters. Tashkorgan literally means "Stone Fortress" and has been a strategic post on the spur of the Silk Road for roughly 2000 years. A stone and mud brick fortress still stands in Tashkorgan overlooking the valley. Tracks to and from the Indian Subcontinent as well as to Central Asia passed by Tashkorgan. Tashkorgan is variantly spelled: Tashkurgan, Tashkurghan, Taxikurgan, Taxkorgan, Taxkurgan.
