The Water Village of Zhou Zhuang is a good day-trip from Suzhou, or can be taken in on the way to Shanghai. Though commercialized, it is an attempt to freeze a moment in time, for tourists to see what little towns and villages were like before industrialization. It also gives you an idea of what the setting of Suzhou was like many years ago.
