Eating Out in Shanghai

Edit This
photo
Traditional Chinese cuisine is only one of the many cuisines one can taste in Shanghai. When you don't want to make the effort to go to a restaurant, grab a bowl of noodles at one of the food stalls at the Bund and let the world (or the seventeen million inhabitants to start with) pass by. Local food features vegetable and sea food dishes with stew-in-brown-soy-bean and stir-fry-in-vegetable-oil as the main cooking method. Shanghai cuisine, a special hybrid, presenting interesting dishes, especially exotic seafood. Fish and shrimps are considered basic and if possible eels, carp and crab will appear as well. Shanghai is also famous for its sweets, including glutinous rice cakes, steamed bread filled with meat (baozi), dough sticks, French pastries, fruit pies and sweets.

Gongdelin

Edit This

A tired old vegetarian restaurant that moved from next to the Park Hotel several years ago and now lies on Nanjing West Road, near the Bird & Flower Market. Specializes in fake meat dishes. Quality has plummeted as the high cost of rent has forced the company into cutting costs. Most of its items are actually made in the same factory that produces its frozen meal lineup, so don't expect anything fresh.

An unique dish is the stir fried beef with deep fried dough sticks, a mix of crispy and soft textures. Service is friendly and attentive.

M on the Bund has won numerous accolades in Shanghai, from readers voting it their favorite restaurant in the Zagat Guide (since 2004), to being the only mainland Chinese restaurant on the Miele Guide's Top 20 best restaurant list.  One visit and you'll see why: the food - "modern European food" is interesting, creative and delicious. The service is among the best in the city, and the views of the Bund and the Pudong skyline are nothing short of stunning.

It's a remarkable combination - great food, great service, great views and "something extra" - a quirky, cool more..
