Known as the Grand View Garden in English located 65 km north of Shanghai on Dianshan Lake west of Quinpu town is a nice daytrip. It can be combined with a visit to Zhou Zhuang Village, a beautiful little town with canals like Suzhou's.

Sonjiang County

You can go to Songjiang County about 40 km southwest of Shanghai. The rare Square Pagoda in the Xinghseng Monastery, Sangong Street is very interesting. Open daily. Besides this monument you can see the Zuibai Ci Garden (Pond for Enjoying Bai's Drunkenness)outside the West Gate of the city.

Wuzhen

Wuzhen is one of the water towns close to Shanghai, easy to reach on a day trip. Busses depart e.g. from Shanghai Stadium. Go and see how daily life was/is - weaving and coloring fabric, pottery, the Shadow Puppet Theatre is a great spectactle as well, with traditional Chinese stories and music played on traditional instruments. Well worth a visit, though it can be crowded at weekends..
