Getting Around in Nanjing
Edit ThisNanjing transportation is well established and convenient for tourists visiting Nanjing through extensive bus routes, subway routes and taxis.
Nanjing Metro
Nanjing has two subway routes providing service to much of the city. Route 1 travels from the North to the South, stopping at Nanjing’s two railway stations. Route 2 goes from East to West Nanjing. The metro features many English signs, and announcements are given in both Chinese and English. The metro staff however speaks little English, so if a traveler has to talk to the staff pantomime will have to be used. Traveling between 8 stations will cost 2rmb, further than that costs 4rmb.
Nanjing Bus Services
Nanjing buses have no English signs, and the drivers do not speak English. So, having the destination written down in Chinese characters to show people is the best way to travel. The newer buses cost 2rmb, and the older buses cost 1rmb to use. Long distance city buses have conductors that provide different priced tickets depending on the distance, and help people get off at their destination.
Nanjing Taxi
Taxis in Nanjing add 1rmb to the final cost on the meter. Due to recent gas hikes, taxis have raised prices but haven’t changed the taxi meters. A short ride will cost 10rmb, and most rides that avoid the suburbs come to about 20rmb or less. The drivers do not speak English, so having directions written in Chinese characters is a must. Also, during the 5 to 6pm rush hour, taxis are changing shift and very difficult to get.
