Ha'erbin the provincial capital of Heilongjiang, situated in the very north of China hosts a winter ice festival well worth a visit during the months of December through to March if you can stand the sub zero temperatures. The ice sculptures beat any Disneyland creations and they are in abundance in streets and parks.

The city itself was established in the Soviet era. This can be seen in the architecture in the old parts of the city.  Some attractions include the Church of Saint Sophia and various Russian ex-pat  night clubs and restaurants.  Harbin is also a stop on the Trans-Siberian railway which begins in Valdivostok.
