Although China is a huge country with many cities that are densely populated, Hangzhou is one of the largest, and therefore, Hangzhou transportation can be very intimidating and difficult for travelers to the area. Among other major highlights to this city are the great West Lake, Xihu, that stretches for roughly 60 miles outside of the city.

Bicycle

One of the most common modes of transportation for locals in Hangzhou is the bicycle. This is an inexpensive and easy to use mode of transport, but it's perhaps not ideally suited for travelers who are visiting Hangzhou. The reason for this is that it can be difficult to determine where you're going on a bike, and it's also somewhat dangerous.

Cars

Rental cars are not popular throughout the Hangzhou region, but taxis are used by tourists almost exclusively. Taxi drivers tend to be knowledgeable and helpful, although it helps if you have a basic knowledge of some Chinese phrases to use at your disposal. Be sure that any taxi that you use has a meter and a certification record, and ensure that the driver uses the meter properly.

On Foot

There are some parts of Hangzhou that are easily accessed by foot. Walking through the city provides you with numerous benefits over other modes of transport; in addition to being good exercise, it allows you more time to see a variety of cultural sites and normal activities throughout the city that you might otherwise miss.
