Hainan Island Beaches
Known as the Chinese Hawaii, Hainan Island has beaches that certainly rival any of those found in Hawaii. Having the only tropical beaches in China, the area is unspoiled and the foliage consisting of coconut palms holds wonderful beauty. There are a number of resorts built here, and top scenic areas include Yalong Bay National Resort, Shishan Volcanic Garden, Guantang Hot Spring Resort, Qizhi Shan, also known as Seven Finger Mountain, and Baihua Ridge. Tianya Haijiao
Tianya Haijiao overlooks the South China Sea and is one of the most stunning sights a visitor can find. Located outside of Sanya City, Tianya Jaijiao means “edge of the sky and the corner of the earth.” Within the breathtaking view are hundreds of large, jagged rocks creating imaginative shapes. Found in these rocks are 2 intertwining stones called The Rocks of Sun and Moon . The stones intertwine one another with the sun resembling the “husband,” and the moon resembling the “wife.” Many newlyweds visit the site because of the romance that it holds.
Qiong Opera
During the Ming Dynasty, Qiong Opera was established in Hainan. With a history that’s over 300 years old, the music is still celebrated today. Each song has its own artistic form with traditional costume and makeup that is directly connected with the Hainan people. These wonderful performances are found throughout the island and are a cultural practice that can’t be missed.
Tomb of Hai Rui
Hai Rui was a Hainanese official during the Ming Dynasty. He was favored among the Hainan people and spoke passionately on the behalf of the community. Eventually Hai Rui fell out of the emperor’s graces. A tomb was built to commemorate his life by his followers. Constructed in 1589, even now his tomb is honored by the locals. Tomb of Hai Rui is located outside Haikou City.
Xiuying Fort Barbette is one of 4 Fort’s found in China. Situated within Haikou, these fortifications were built in 1890 and are a wonderful example of military architecture during the Qing Dynasty. The defenses were built in response to an attack planned by the French army. Besides viewing the vacant walls, 5 cannons are still standing intact.
