China Transportation

Edit This

Being such an enormous country, China transportation isn't always the easiest to master and it can take you a long time to journey between desirable destinations such as Beijing and Hong Kong. However, by following the handy tips below, you should be able to make the best of the nation's considerable roads, flights and train and bus network.

Buses

Local Chinese buses are not recommended for a number of reasons. Unless you know the language and the bus system well it can be hard to work out such points as prices and routes. Furthermore, there are serious safety issues with local buses. Your best bet is to use established tourist coaches. Some of the best of these can take you to all the major attractions such as the Great Wall of China.

Taxis

The best option for China transportation, taxis are favored by travelers of all budgets for their usefulness and cheapness. For example, a 20-minute ride in the capital will set you back $3 to 4. You should ensure that you have your destination and your hotel name and address written down in Chinese characters for the benefit of your driver as knowledge of English is extremely limited in China.

Trains

While train stations can be quite busy and intimidating, prices are generally inexpensive even if times are slow. For example, it takes 17 hours to get to Xian from Beijing although the cost is only about $50 for a comfortable sleeper seat. China transportation becomes an exciting prospect when you can view all the splendor and detail of the country while traveling by train.

Planes

Not as cheap as one would expect, there is nonetheless currently a boom in local Chinese budget airlines serving most of the main cities and places of interest. Bear in mind that the Chinese don't like to queue in an orderly Western fashion and that signs in airports are not always entirely clear in their meaning.
