Beijing has more than 1,000 restaurants serving food from all over the world. Although famous for Peking Duck and noodle-based dishes of the north, the city can also provide a taste of just about every other regional cuisine, including Shanghainese, Hunanese, Cantonese, and Sichuan. As for Western cuisine, France is represented by Maxim’s of Paris. All large hotels offer cosmopolitan fare, from Mexican at the Sara Hotel to German at the Great Wall Sheraton. When dining in Beijing, remember that people eat early. Lunch hour is 11am.-2pm. and dinner 5pm.-8pm. Restaurants are packed at lunch. Hours in hotels and smaller and privately run establishments are more flexible.

Donghuamen Night Market (off Wangfuijing) is a good option when you want to try one of the local dishes. This area is packed with numerous food stalls and market stalls. You can also give at a try at Yong An Li vegetable market. Beijing also has an impressive array of restaurants suited for the international business people. Be prepared to pay for it as well. Besides that, it won’t be much of a problem to find a pleasant restaurant where you can enjoy, in an authentic setting, one of the northern Chinese meat dishes. For those who want to know: yes, McDonalds has also found its way to China’s capital (31A Dongchangan Jie).

Locals offer this sage advice: Do not eat at an empty restaurant. They are right.

Fangshan Restaurant

Make sure to visit this fabulous restaurant after a visit to Beihei Park, the former Imperial Garden right next to the Forbidden City. It's situated on an artificial island you can reach via a bridge or a pagoda-roofed ferry.

It's quite expensive for chinese standards - expect to pay about $ 30 for a twelve course meal. There are some rather exotic choices like cow's face or dromedar's feet, but you can always opt for one of the more conventinal offers. Either way, you'll never find this kind of fare in a normal Chinese Restaurant. It's simply wonderful, either more..

Gongdelin

This is a great vegetarian Buddhist 'fake meat' place. You can get a large meal for $4 (Y30) a person. The menu is in clear English. Though the wait staff speaks little English, pointing to the menu works just fine.

Even my friends skeptical of all things tofu loved the place. The mushroom soup is amazing.

The restauranted is located one entertaining mile walk south of Tiananmen Square. Be sure to duck into some alleyways to your right and left along the way for an improv Hutong tour.

This restaurant is very difficult to find, so ask around. It is right next to the Lama Temple. It is Hunan style, but not as spicy, to suit more senstitive palates.
