Getting Around in United Arab Emirates

Edit This
This United Arab Emirates transportation guide will help you to explore the country in the most convenient way.

Public Transport

Even though the United Arab Emirates is known for its excellent road conditions, public transportation within cities is basic. Tourists visiting the country can consider the option of traveling around the country via the extensive monorail and train service in Dubai. Intercity bus services are the common mode of public transport. They are fast, convenient and frequent.

On the other hand, taxis are available in other Emirate cities like Dubai and Sharjah. This is considered as the cheapest form of public transport in UAE. Distances in UAE are rather short and a taxi ride within Abu Dhabi will cost you around US $2. Keep in mind that you will be charged on the basis of the distance traveled. You will be charged an extra amount of around US $3 after 10 p.m.

Car

UAE has a state-of-the-art road system. However, you will need a special international driving license if you are planning to rent a car. Car rentals are comparatively cheaper than most other countries. You will also have to pay a per day fee for renting any car. Traffic congestion can prove to be problem if you plan to get around the UAE by car. The traffic rules are pretty strict and you would be fined heavily if you flout any rules.

You can purchase road maps from the local stores. Do ask the locals for directions, as the signage can be misleading at times.
