Islamic Festivals

Id-ul-Fitr can be translated as the "Festival of the Breaking of the Fast." During the month of Ramadan, people keep fast and once they are able to see the full moon on the last day of the month, they break their fasts. This festival celebrates the end of Ramzan, the Muslim month of fasting. During the occasion, people gather together to feast and enjoy. Fitr means "breaking" and has come from ‘fatar’, a word in Persian. Fitr also means ‘alms’ and comes from the word ‘fitrah’. People make special delicacies during this period and distribute them among neighbors and friends. Mosques are full during the day as people offer prayers there. People gather together to greet one another.

The feast of Bakr-Id is the festival to bestow and to give up. On this occasion devotees thank the Allah for your good luck and money which they can share it with people who are less fortunate. Id-ul-Azha, is an Arabic phrase, which means 'the feast of sacrifice'. It is also popularly called “Id-ul-Zuha”. Bakr-Id is a popular festival when animals are slaughtered to death as sacrificial offerings. The meat is later distributed among poor and deprived people. This is done in memory of the sacrifice that Abraham was willing to make of his son on the command of God.
