Liwa Oasis
Situated about 2 hours driving distance from Abu Dhabi, Liwa Oasis nestles between some of the highest and steepest sand dunes of the world. Moreeb Dune with its 300 meters height is deemed as one of the largest sand dunes of the world. With its freshwater pools and date plantations, Liwa Oasis offers refreshment to the travelers from the parched and rugged climate of the region. It has about 50 villages with moderate population living here. Towards the southern part of the oasis lies an uninhabited desolate desert called Rub al-Khali. Lots of tourists and cosmopolitan expatriates throng the oasis during the Liwa festival held every year between December and January. Liwa Oasis has one 4-star hotel and 1 rest house for accommodating the tourists.
Bu Tinah Island
Bu Tinah Island, located about 130 km west of Abu Dhabi, will give you a relief from the din and bustle of the city of Abu Dhabi. Shaped like a horse-shoe, it is a natural paradise with a rich collection of endangered species of water fowl. The island hosts the world’s second largest population of an endangered large marine mammal dugong. Besides dugong, this island is a safe haven for other critically threatened species like dolphins, flamingos and the hawksbill turtle. Undisturbed by any human activity, this island teaches us how to protect ecosystem. The beautiful stretch of coral reef beneath the crystal clear water is a fascinating sight. Several migratory birds use this island as a pit-stop on their way to Africa from central Asia.
Al Ain Zoo and Aquarium
About 140 km distance from Abu Dhabi, Al Ain city, also known as ‘the Garden City,’ has the largest zoo of UAE. Founded in 1969, Al Ain Zoo and Aquarium is home to a diverse range of common and rare species of animals. The zoo takes special care to increase the number of endangered animals by providing them a perfect breeding condition. A variety of antelopes including oryx, eland, gazelle and lechwe are found in abundance at this zoo. The Cathouse section of the zoo displays a broad spectrum of feline species from jaguars, leopards to lions and pumas. The children as well as adults find immense pleasure visiting the aviary, the reptile or the monkey and gorilla sections of the zoo.
