Museums in Side
Edit ThisA vacation trip to Side would not be complete without seeing the outstanding Side Museums that are located throughout the town. Many travelers that make a trip to Turkey include Side and her museums as a destination and it is easily seen why. There is really only 1 building that is an enclosed museum but the city itself is a museum on display that few others can match.
Side Museum
This famous building has been erected over the ancient Roman baths that once stood here. It is a rather small building consisting of an open-aired entrance and 3 rooms. It is the fabulous items that are kept here which make it special. At the entrance you can see several old Roman artifacts on display, and these antiquated items continue on into the first room. The second room has old fashioned burial pits with some real skeletons still present in them. And the third room houses a large number of sarcophagi from the time of the Roman Empire. For those who like art work, there are a number of original carved statues that you can muse over. Other artifacts are put on view out in the garden outside the building that looks toward the coastline.
Outside Museums
Just outside the Side museum is the huge Hellenistic Theater a major attraction since a great deal of it is in decent enough shape to get a good idea of what it looked like. Also located in the city are the dual temples of the ancient Roman gods Apollo and Athena. Another treat is that the local government has recently allowed the excavating of the areas in the city. These places reveal shops, roads and the aqueduct system the Romans put in. All these glorious mementos make Side a definite must see destination on a trip into Turkey.
