Izmir, Turkey rests on the western tip of Turkey. Its strategic position on the Aegean Sea has made this location the home of many people for thousands of years, and it is now a booming and beautiful modern city. The mix of old and new that Izmir has to offer make for a great many entertaining sights, making it easy to keep yourself entertained in this modern day oasis.

The Clock Tower

One of the main landmarks of Izmir is the Clock Tower, built by the locally born French architect Raymond Charles Pere in 1901. It was constructed to honor the 25th year of power by the reigning Ottoman Sultan, Abdulhamit I. The mechanism in the clock tower was a gift to the sultan from the German leader Kaiser Wilhelm II, and has kept time faithfully for more than 100 years. More than 25 meters tall, the clock tower presents a great photo opportunity, with fountains on each of the four sides and distinctive architectural details on the base and capitol of the tower.

Saint Polycarp Church

The oldest Christian church in Izmir, Saint Polycarp was built in 1625 by the wish of the king of France, Louis the 13th. Saint Polycarp was the bishop of Smryna, the ancient Greek city that stood where Izmir is now. Polycarp was martyred by the Romans in 155 A.D. While the church has been damaged at various times due to fire and weather, it has always been restored and still stands looking very similar to how it must have 300 years ago.

The Agora

Smyrna, the ancient Greek city that is now Izmir, is steeped in history as far back as 3000 B.C. While the Agora is certainly not that old, it's still very interesting to see. The Agora was a marketplace that served Smyrna and was built during the reign of Alexander the Great, or around the 4th century B.C. Destroyed by an earthquake, the Agora was rebuilt in 178 A.D. by the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius.

Kemeralti Market

The Kemeralti Market, located in Konak district of Izmir, is not only a historical area more than 300 years old, but also one of the best places to shop in Izmir. Sights in the market include the marble fountain Donertas Sebili, built in 1814 and located on Anafartalar Street, and the Mayors' Building, an important monument from the Turkish War of Liberation.

Kültürpark (culture park) is situated at the center of İzmir, similar to Central Park in New York. It's a nice, silent, green getaway from city life.
