Shopping in Izmir

Edit This

Modern day Izmir was once the ancient Greek city of Smyrna. This strategic piece of property at the western edge of Turkey has seen the Ottomans, Romans, Alexander the Great and many more famous pieces of history come and go. Now Izmir is a thriving, modern city, although you don't have to look to far to see the rich history this city has to offer. Not surprising, due to Izmir's historical importance as a port on the Aegean sea and a hub of trade for the region, Izmir offers some great shopping. From the ancient Kemeralti Marketplace to the Konak Pier mall, any shopper, young or old, should be able to find what they're looking for in this remarkable city.

Kemeralti Market

The best place to shop in Izmir is the Kemeralti Market. Originally built sometime around the 17th century, the Kemeralti is now a place to find the best goods of both old and new Izmir. Kemeralti means "under arches," because some of the streets were covered by high arches. The cornerstone of the Kemeralti is the Hisar Mosque, built in 1592, and one of the more important landmarks of Izmir's time under Ottoman rule. Alongside traditional shops selling handicrafts, ceramics, wooden sculpture and clothing, you will also find an abundance of modern shops, cafes and business centers. Prices in the Kemeralti are very reasonable, and there are so many places to shop here you may have a hard time going anywhere else.

Kizlaragasi Han

Located in the Kemeralti neighborhood is the Kizlaragasi Han, a definite must for your shopping excursion. The building was originally built during the period of Ottoman rule in Izmir as an Inn, but is now a handicraft shop. There is also a small open air cafeteria that serves Turkish coffee and tea. Some of the goods you can find here include silver jewelry, carpets and ceramic pots and vases.

Konak Pier

Konak Pier is a shopping mall set against the waterfront of Izmir. Built in 1890, it was originally built as a warehouse, and has only been a mall since 2004. Konak pier has been very successful, however, and there are plans to expand it beyond its present size. The food court mixes western fast food such as Burger King and KFC with regional and European options, and the stores represent a good cross-section of the area's goods.
