Cruises in Izmir
Edit ThisIzmir is located on the Aegean Sea, on the western edge of Turkey. Because of its location at the crossroads of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, Izmir has become an important port and a popular tourist destination. Greece, which is located right across the Aegean, has had a major role in the history of Izmir, giving it a different flavor than many other Turkish cities and making it a great destination for any traveler. The history of Izmir dates back to 3000 B.C., and there's a lot to do and see in this Mediterranean metropolis. The Mediterranean is one of the most popular places for cruises, and Izmir has become a common port.
Short Cruises
The Aegean Sea is basically a large bay of the Mediterranean, bringing Izmir into close proximity with a number of great cities to visit. Because of this, the area offers some of the best short cruises in the world. A 7-day cruise is not uncommon, and destinations can include Bari and Venice in Italy, Istanbul, Katakolon in Greece and Dubrovnik, in Croatia. Venice is very popular place for cruises to start, although you can find them starting all over the Mediterranean.
Longer Cruises
Because of the Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean with the Red Sea, longer cruises can explore the best sights of the Mediterranean and the Middle East. There are some great stops in the Red Sea, include Sharm El Sheik, and you can continue around to the southern end of the Arabian peninsula to stop in cities like Salalah and Dubai. Longer Mediterranean cruises typically start further west, with Barcelona, Spain, being one of the most popular ports of departure.
Things to Do in Izmir
One of the great things about stopping in Izmir on your cruise is that a great deal of the city's sights and attractions are centered around the waterfront and city center. The Kemeralti Market offers some of the best shopping in the region, and you can haggle over handmade Turkish goods and souvenirs. Konak Square, home of one of Izmir's most famous landmarks, the Clock Tower, is also quite close to the water. Other sights include the remains of the Agora, an ancient marketplace that served the Greek city of Smyrna, and remnants of the Roman aqueducts. While you are in Izmir try to take a ride of the Asansor elevator to get the most picturesque view in the city.
