Shopping in Dalaman

Edit This

There are always places to shop in the Dalaman area. From the traditional bazaars to the high end designer style shops, every taste is catered to.

Markets

There are markets in Koycegiz, Marmaris, Ortaca and Fethiye. All of these markets are very similar, and you'll often spot the same sales people in each location. Fethiye market, which takes place on a Tuesday, is the largest in the Dalaman area. There is also a specific tourist market in Sarigerme. Potential shoppers at this market should note that it is not cheaper than the shops in the village, and that stall owners in this market can be pushy and rude at times. No locals actually shop here, and a potentially better option would be to visit the aforementioned shops in the village.

Be careful while perusing these tourist markets. As in all countries, opportunistic thieves are not uncommon, although nothing to be unnecessarily worried about. Use common sense and do not keep valuables on display.

Hotel Shops

On the whole and as a general rule, hotel shops in this area have what they consider as a captive audience market, and therefore charge well over the going price for items which could be purchased for half the cost in the local shops.

Haggling and Bargaining

The Turkish love to haggle. When you're quoted a price and it seems too high, feel free to try to cut the shopkeeper down a little. This must always be done in good spirits, and bear in mind that once a price is agreed upon, it's rude not to buy. Also, let the shopkeeper quote their asking price before offering an idea of what you expect to buy the item for!

It is normal in the smaller shops in Turkey for the shopkeeper to invite you to drink some apple tea with him. As a rule, shopkeepers in the Dalaman area are very welcoming and as with the rest of the county, are very hospitable to tourists.

Carpet Shops

Carpet weaving in Turkey can be traced back as far as 7,000 B.C. There are many carpet shops in the Dalaman region.

Places of Interest and Handy Tips

The Grand Bazaar at Dalaman Airport is good for picking up those last minute gifts, but is extremely pricey. Shops are generally open from 8:00am until 10:00pm or even later in the summer months. Jewelry is a good buy, especially in the larger shopping areas of Marmaris, but be aware of the amount of counterfeit watches and other items in circulation.

Dalaman has an extensive range of fairly priced shops.
