Museums in Salalah

Edit This

Salalah is a deep-rooted cultural town that is famous for its historical ruins and ancient monuments. The well-preserved heritage of the town is evident in its museums, which are destinations of fascinating art, culture, religion and history. Here is a guide to the museums in Salalah.

Salalah Museum

The Salalah Museum, located in the Cultural Center, is the largest museum in town and houses an eclectic collection of the geographical and cultural legacy of the region. There are several neatly-organized sections including the ones dedicated to traditional literary masterpieces. A section is also devoted to biological rock formations and fossils belonging to the erstwhile era of Salalah’s landscape. Visitors can discover ancient rocks inscribed with several significant symbols and Arabic scripting of the medieval age. The seemingly unending alleys of the museum also feature numismatic coins belonging to the 11th century and exquisite clay pots from the Middle Ages. There are ancient documents, scriptures, manuscripts in Arabic along with items related to the town’s celebrated frankincense trade. Replicas of shipping ports, trade routes and caravans fittingly depict the glory of the Arab merchants and the incense trade era. The Salalah Museum also offers information on neighboring cities like Al Blaid. Admission to the museum is free and opening hours are-Saturday to Wednesday from 7:30am to 2:30pm.

Sohar Fort Musuem

The fort at Soha has a well-kept museum that gives a broad overview of the ancient culture of the town with its heritage memorabilia and ingeniously-preserved relics. There are silver coins, pots, scriptures, sculptures and a whole range of items chronicling the evolution of Salalah.

Salalah’s museums flaunt the town’s antediluvian identity with panache and are an interesting cache of culture, history, art and heritage.
