Sights in Musandam peninsula
Edit This
Musandam Peninsula in Oman is called the Gulf’s fjord area. The fjord-like canals provide spectacular views. If you can afford it, charter a boat to experience this area. The Musandam Peninsula is the northernmost part of Oman and runs out into the Strait of Hormuz at the entry to the Persian Gulf. The area is separated from the main body of Oman by the United Arab Emirates. Musandam begins at the point where the mountains rise from the plains. The mountains have separated communities for centuries. Most of the coastal villages can be reached by boat not by road.
View the Fjords
The main attraction in Musandam Peninsula is the geological formations that are fjord-like canals. They are best viewed by boat. One can either hire a motorized boat or a traditional fishing dhow and go for a sail and see the sights. A dhow is a more preferable form of transport as it attracts the dolphins to it. Keep a keen eye out for dolphins even as you admire the fjords from the dhow. You can either go on a day’s journey or take a three-day trip on a dhow. Most of them are now fitted out to take tourists and are quite convenient.
Drive Down the Coast
There is a good highway all along the western coast of the Peninsula. Drive down it to see the coast on one side and the mountains on the other. The scenic beauty along the drive is breathtaking.
Watch the Sunset
Have a campfire on one of the small beaches that this peninsula abounds in. Ask the dhow captain to stop at one of the beaches and watch the sun set. Then light a campfire. Both are beautiful sights.
Go Trekking
Go trekking on one of the interior hills and get an eyeful of the scenic beauty of the fjords from the hill top. This is a major attraction, though appropriate only for the truly fit person.
These are the major sights of Musandam Peninsula. It is all about witnessing nature at her marvelous best and admiring her beauty. There are no museums or other sights to see in Musandam. However, the beauty of the fjords both from land and water make up for the lack of other sights to see in this unique geological area. The view from the hills is also a beautiful one and well worth the trek to the top.
