Beaches in Musandam peninsula
Edit ThisThe Musandam peninsula offers a geographical treat found nowhere else in the Middle East. Located on the edge of the Arabian tectonic plate, the peninsula is slowly being pushed downward as the Arabian plate grinds into and is pushed underneath of the Eurasian plate. As what were once valleys fill up with water, this creates a network of fjords that run throughout the Northern edge of the peninsula, resembling the more commonly known fjords of the Northern European countries. The networks of fjords provide a beautiful multitude of beaches to explore.
Hop on Board your Local Dhow
The Dhow is a traditional fishing boat common in the region. Historically used for fishing and day-to-day transport, they are being reinvented as a means of providing tourists with an opportunity to explore the Musandam peninsula's beaches and waterways. One of the great advantages of the Dhows is that they are not motorized. This has a couple of advantages. First, it provides a more leisurely way to explore the rich geographical coastline of the peninsula. Second, without motors to scare them away, the dolphins that are plentiful in the region will freely follow the Dhows around, interacting with the tourists on board. If you bring your gear you can even hop over the side for a bit of snorkeling.
Go Diving
Diving has been steadily
gaining popularity as an attraction of the peninsula. Because of the
naturally protected waterways, there is a great deal of underwater life
to be seen under the waters of the Musandam peninsula. Dive services are continuing to develop. Currently there is an Expert Divers dive center in Khasab
next to the Golden Tulip hotel, as well as a number of smaller services
scattered throughout the major cities and towns. Because of the great
variety of waterways and coastlines throughout the fjords, dives can be found ranging from introductory to very advanced.
Charlotte Anne
If you want to explore the coastline in a little more style, the Charlotte Anne is a traditional Baltic Trader that has been outfitted specifically for charter. With four private cabins and a public saloon and mess hall, the Charlotte Anne can hold up to twelve guests on an overnight trip, and a few more for a day cruise. The Charlotte Anne explores all the coasts from one end of the Musandam peninsula to the other, and also provides private dive services.
