Top 5 Must Do's in Masirah Island

Edit This

Off the coast of Oman, in the Arabian Sea, lies Masirah Island. Unassuming at first, the island has slowly grown in popularity as a vacation destination. Its rugged beaches, large population of nesting Sea Turtles and desirable surf has continued to attract the attention of travelers. With the recently opened Swiss-Belhotel Masirah Resort, the Island has turned into a genuine tourist destination, albeit one that retains the natural unspoiled beauty of the Arabian coast. Here are the 5 must do's for your trip to Masirah Island.

1. Go Find Some Turtles

Masirah Island is home to four distinct species of sea turtle. Oman has recognized the importance of preserving these beautiful creatures, as it is home to a large portion of their nesting grounds. On Masirah Island you can find the green turtle, the hawksbill turtle, the Olive Ridley turtle and the loggerhead turtle. All four species nest and their eggs hatch at different times throughout the year, so you have a good chance of enjoying their company during your visit to Masirah Island.

2. Enjoy the Surf

Before it became a vacation spot, Masirah Island was already well known among surfers and windsurfers as a great place to catch waves in the Middle East. Not for beginners, the coastline is rough and rocky, but the rewards are well worth it. Head east from the town of Hilf to find Surf Beach, a good place to start, then head south along the coast. The swells will get bigger the further you go. In the summer, high winds on the west side of the Island make it an extremely popular destination for wind and kite surfers.

3. Go on a Trek

One of the best qualities of Masirah is the fact that it remains undeveloped. Take advantage by trying out a few of the many trails that criss-cross the island. There are trails for every experience level, and because of Masirah Island's small size, you can see a lot on one hike.

4. Catch a Fish

Sport fishing tours are available off the coast of Masirah Island. Tuna, Kingfish and Barracuda are all swimming off the coast, so head out and see what comes your way. If the open ocean isn't your style, you can also fish off the beaches.

5. Rent an Off-Roader

Because the island is still relatively undeveloped, to truly see everything you have to be able to go off-road. Rent yourself a 4-wheel drive vehicle and go exploring.
